Separation anxiety is one of the most common and distressing conditions in companion dogs, and early prevention during puppyhood is far more effective than treatment after anxiety is established.
Separation anxiety prevention is a case where early investment dramatically reduces long-term suffering. A puppy that learns from week one that being alone is safe and temporary develops the emotional foundation to cope with owners working. A puppy carried everywhere, never left alone, and then suddenly required to spend 8 hours alone when lockdown ends develops the panicked, destructive separation anxiety that causes distress to the dog and frustration to the owner. Prevention requires deliberate planning before the puppy arrives: gradual alone-time building, crate or confinement training, and consistent departure and arrival routines that do not amplify the significance of separations.
