Snail farming (heliciculture) is a growing sector for food and cosmetics ingredients, with questions about mollusc welfare relevant given the scale of production and emerging sentience science.
Snail farming welfare occupies the same scientific frontier as bivalve and gastropod welfare more broadly: genuine uncertainty about the capacity for subjective suffering, combined with large production volumes. Methods used to stimulate mucin production in cosmetics snails -- including electric currents or physical irritants -- are potential welfare concerns if snails have any pain capacity. The precautionary principle applied to hundreds of millions of individuals suggests that production method choices matter even in the absence of certainty. More extensive farming systems that allow natural behaviour are both potentially better for welfare and better for snail health outcomes, creating some alignment between welfare and production quality.
