Common carp farming in traditional European pond systems is one of the oldest forms of aquaculture, with distinct welfare characteristics from both intensive and extensive management approaches.
European pond carp welfare is complicated by the long tradition that makes extensive systems seem inherently more humane than intensive alternatives. Extensive pond systems provide natural foraging, complex environments, and appropriate water quality for much of the production cycle -- genuine welfare advantages. But harvest conditions, including pond draining with crowded collection, and live sale practices around Christmas markets where fish may be held in overcrowded, poorly oxygenated containers, can cause acute welfare harm. The welfare challenge is in the transition from the production system to the consumer -- a phase that receives far less welfare attention than production conditions.
