Welfare Considerations

Captive pinnipeds exist in a space between the entertainment industry and genuine conservation education. The best facilities provide large naturalistic pools, complex social groupings, and enrichment that allows expression of natural behaviours. The worst keep animals in bare concrete tanks doing circus-style tricks. Welfare standards vary enormously. The use of food deprivation to control performance behaviour is an ethical concern even in facilities that otherwise score well. Progressive facilities are moving away from performances toward naturalistic observation, but economic pressures often push in the opposite direction.

Avoid facilities that use hungry animals performing tricks as their primary seal or sea lion exhibit
Support marine protected areas that maintain wild pinniped populations
