Welfare Considerations

Guinea pig welfare failures are remarkably common and largely preventable. The combination of insufficient space, incorrect diet (no fresh vitamin C sources), and solitary keeping creates preventable suffering in millions of animals. The public perception of guinea pigs as easy starter pets contributes to underinvestment in their care. In reality, they require daily fresh vegetables, large enclosures, veterinary care from an exotics specialist, and the company of their own species. Switzerland's legal requirement for pair-keeping reflects evidence that solitary guinea pigs suffer psychologically. Education at the point of sale could prevent much of this suffering.
