Japanese quail are farmed in large numbers for eggs and meat, typically under intensive conditions with little regulatory oversight specific to the species.
Quail welfare falls through regulatory gaps in most countries — welfare frameworks were developed for chickens and do not explicitly cover quail, leaving producers with wide latitude. The result is that quail are often kept in conditions that would not meet even the modest standards applied to laying hens. Wire-floor cages damage feet; high densities cause stress and cannibalism; rapid growth for meat birds creates metabolic pressures. As quail production grows to meet demand for alternative protein sources, welfare standards need to be explicitly extended to cover these birds.
