Roadside zoos and pseudo-sanctuaries exploit two things simultaneously: public desire for exotic animal contact and public willingness to donate to animal welfare. Offering cub petting, handling experiences, and emotive conservation narratives while providing grossly inadequate conditions is a welfare fraud. Animals in these facilities often show extreme stereotypic behaviour, physical health problems from poor nutrition and veterinary neglect, and psychological trauma from repeated handling. Effective action requires supporting legitimate accreditation systems, reporting facilities to regulatory authorities, and refusing to engage with pay-to-pet operations regardless of their conservation framing.
