Emergency veterinary medicine faces welfare challenges around pain recognition, triage decisions, and end-of-life care that differ importantly from routine practice.
Emergency veterinary welfare is simultaneously an area of enormous progress and persistent challenge. Validated pain assessment scales for dogs, cats, horses, and more recently rabbits and rats allow objective pain measurement. Opioid analgesics provide effective pain relief where available. Surgical and critical care capabilities have advanced dramatically. The persistent challenges are access — rural areas and lower-income owners have less access to emergency care — and the financial dimension of end-of-life decisions. Euthanasia is sometimes delayed by owner financial distress rather than welfare considerations. Systems that separate financial barriers from welfare decisions improve outcomes for animals.
