Broiler chicken welfare is the highest volume welfare issue in animal agriculture by numbers of animals affected. The combination of fast-growth genetics, high stocking density, and bare environments creates welfare problems at industrial scale. The Better Chicken Commitment addresses the root causes — slower breeds, lower density, and enrichment — and has been signed by many major companies. But signing without implementing is a persistent pattern. Consumer pressure, investor engagement, and NGO monitoring of implementation progress are all necessary to convert commitments into welfare outcomes. Every degree of welfare improvement at broiler scale affects hundreds of millions of animals.
