Commercial shipping is a major source of underwater noise that affects marine wildlife across ocean basins — a largely invisible welfare issue.
Shipping noise welfare is chronic rather than acute — not individual animals dying from explosions but populations of cetaceans experiencing continuous stress from noise that masks communication, disrupts feeding, and activates stress physiology over years and decades. The cumulative welfare impact on populations of long-lived, highly social whales may be enormous. Solutions exist and are cost-effective: vessel speed reductions, engine quieting technology, and seasonal lane adjustments. The IMO (International Maritime Organization) has adopted voluntary guidelines on underwater noise reduction — making them mandatory and enforced would produce immediate welfare benefits at meaningful scale.
