Honeybee welfare sits at a philosophical junction. The evidence for individual bee sentience is debated but not absent — bees show complex learning, navigation, and some evidence of pessimistic cognitive bias under stress. Colony-level welfare is even more complex: hives are superorganisms where individual and collective interests may diverge. Commercial practices like queen replacement and wing clipping affect individual bees in ways that may or may not matter morally depending on one's views on insect sentience. What is more clearly a welfare concern is pesticide exposure and habitat degradation that weakens colonies and impairs individual bee function.
