Urban pigeons are often seen as pests but are sentient birds capable of suffering. Humane management through contraception and food control offers welfare-friendly alternatives to lethal methods.
Pigeons occupy an uncomfortable position in urban wildlife management: unwanted by many but wholly dependent on human-created environments. Lethal management methods inflict suffering without solving the underlying problem, as depleted populations rapidly recover when food sources remain. Contraceptive feeding programmes, combined with reducing food availability through waste management, achieve sustained population stabilisation without ongoing killing. Spikes and netting used to exclude pigeons from roosting sites should be regularly inspected to prevent birds from becoming trapped or injured against exclusion devices.
