The translation of welfare science into practice is a critical bottleneck for improving animal lives at scale. Researchers and welfare advocates sometimes underestimate the practical, economic, and cultural barriers that make adoption of evidence-based practices difficult for farmers operating on thin margins. Communication that acknowledges farmer expertise, presents welfare improvements as professionally beneficial, and is delivered through trusted peer channels is substantially more effective than top-down expert messaging. Investing in agricultural extension services and demonstration programmes may deliver more welfare improvement per dollar than additional fundamental research in contexts where the science-practice gap is large.
