Animals used in medical device testing undergo invasive surgical procedures that cause acute and sometimes chronic pain, and may experience post-operative complications including infection, implant failure, and mobility restriction. While pain management is required, the adequacy and duration of analgesic coverage varies between facilities. The welfare case for accelerating alternatives development is strong: sophisticated bench-top simulators, computational fluid dynamics modelling, and advanced in vitro tissue platforms are increasingly able to assess device performance without live animal implantation. Industry investment in alternatives is growing but remains insufficient relative to the scale of current animal use.
