Tilapia is one of the most widely farmed fish globally, produced in conditions ranging from extensive ponds to intensive RAS, with welfare standards that vary dramatically across the supply chain.
Tilapia welfare suffers from the same combination of factors as other intensively farmed fish: high stocking densities causing chronic stress and aggression, poor water quality compromising health, and slaughter without stunning. The remarkable environmental resilience of tilapia — their ability to survive in conditions that would kill most fish — has been exploited to justify poor water quality management, but resilience to adverse conditions does not mean the fish do not experience stress in those conditions. Hormonal sex reversal treatment during early development raises questions about developmental welfare that are not well-studied. As a globally significant food fish, improving tilapia welfare through density limits, water quality standards, and stunning requirements at slaughter would benefit an enormous number of individual animals.
