The relationship between zoo visitors and zoo animal welfare is more complex than either zoo critics or defenders typically acknowledge. Visitors are not simply a welfare negative — for some species and individuals, human presence provides genuine environmental enrichment and positive stimulus. But for many animals in many contexts, visitor crowds cause measurable stress that compounds throughout the visitor day. The welfare solution is not to eliminate visitors but to manage the interface: providing animals with genuine retreat options away from public view, restricting visitor behaviour that causes direct harm (flash, glass-tapping, noise), and designing facilities that buffer animal stress while maintaining the educational connection between public and animals that justifies zoo conservation claims.
