Animals capable of social recognition, long-term memory, problem-solving and self-awareness have correspondingly rich inner lives in which positive and negative experiences matter significantly. Welfare systems designed around minimal thresholds — preventing gross physical suffering — are inadequate for animals with these capacities. The cognitive evidence supports providing genuine social relationships, mental stimulation, choice and control in farm environments.
