Abalone are increasingly farmed for food and restoration purposes, but their welfare needs as sentient molluscs require more attention than they currently receive in production systems.
Abalone welfare sits in the scientifically contested zone between clear invertebrate non-sentience and demonstrated responsiveness to noxious stimuli. Abalone show tissue withdrawal from damaging stimuli and have nervous systems capable of processing sensory information, but lack the centralised neural architecture associated with vertebrate pain experience. The precautionary principle suggests that production conditions should not impose obvious sources of distress. Water quality, appropriate temperature, adequate food, suitable substrate and humane harvesting methods are all welfare-relevant parameters. Disease events that cause mass mortality involve suffering at scale proportional to the number of affected animals. Abalone farming welfare research is nascent and developing frameworks from fish welfare science provides a useful starting point.
