Poison programmes cause slow deaths in poisoned birds and secondary poisoning in raptors that prey on affected pigeons. More welfare-positive management focuses on food source reduction — removing the resource that drives population growth — combined with exclusion to prevent problematic roosting and nesting. Managed pigeon lofts that concentrate breeding birds and replace eggs with dummy eggs humanely reduce population growth without killing adults. These approaches require more planning but cause far less welfare harm.
