Wild boar research has traditionally relied on lethal sampling but advances in non-invasive monitoring are transforming our ability to study this species without killing individuals.
Research ethics for wildlife species involves balancing the knowledge gained against the welfare cost of study methods. Lethal sampling of wild boar, once considered standard practice, is increasingly recognised as avoidable when non-invasive alternatives can answer the same questions. GPS collar studies do cause capture stress but provide longitudinal individual data impossible to obtain otherwise. Camera trap and fecal DNA approaches cause zero direct welfare harm. The transition toward non-invasive wild boar research reflects the broader application of 3Rs principles to wildlife science, an area where regulatory frameworks are less developed than for captive animals.
