The One Health framework recognises that human, animal, and environmental health are inseparable, making animal welfare improvement a public health priority.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought renewed global attention to the relationship between animal welfare, wildlife trade, and pandemic risk. Stressed, immunocompromised animals shed pathogens more readily and show increased viral replication. The conditions that create poor animal welfare — crowding, inadequate nutrition, poor sanitation, high stress — are precisely the conditions that favour pathogen emergence and transmission. Improving animal welfare is therefore not only an ethical imperative but a practical pandemic prevention strategy with enormous human health implications. This alignment of animal welfare and human health interests provides a powerful policy argument for welfare investment.
