Animal Welfare and Food Labelling: What Labels Mean and How to Read Them

Food labelling for animal welfare is complex and inconsistent, with many claims that are misleading, unverified, or apply only to a subset of welfare concerns.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Consumer trust in food welfare labelling is undermined by inconsistency, greenwashing, and the absence of mandatory minimum standards for welfare claims. A label stating cage-free or free-range tells a consumer very little about actual welfare conditions without knowledge of the specific standards behind the claim in that jurisdiction. Third-party audited certification schemes provide stronger assurance but their reach is limited. The most reliable approach for consumers is to identify specific certification marks with publicly available standards and audit requirements, and to be skeptical of non-specific welfare language that appears on packaging without supporting certification.
