Organic certification provides real welfare benefits compared to conventional intensive production through requirements for outdoor access, higher space allowances, and prohibition of routine antibiotic use. However, organic status is not synonymous with high welfare and significant variation exists between organic operations depending on certification body standards and farm management quality. The absence of routine antibiotic use improves long-term welfare outcomes by reducing antibiotic resistance-related treatment failure. Outdoor access enables expression of natural behaviours impossible in indoor systems. However, consumers should understand that organic labelling addresses welfare in part rather than comprehensively, and additional certification for specific welfare outcomes provides greater assurance.
