The welfare harms created by extreme selective breeding represent one of the most systematic failures of the animal production industry. Belgian Blue caesarean sections, brachycephalic dog breathing problems, and fast-growth broiler cardiac failure are all direct consequences of single-trait genetic selection. The genetics industry now has tools to select simultaneously for production and welfare traits. The barrier to welfare-positive genetics is market structure and short-term economic incentives rather than technical impossibility. Consumer demand for welfare-positive breeds and regulatory requirements for breed welfare assessment can drive change.
