Automated pain detection technology addresses a fundamental welfare bottleneck on farms: the practical impossibility of closely observing every animal regularly in large-scale systems. Most pain in farm animals goes undetected because stockpeople cannot monitor hundreds or thousands of individuals with the frequency required. Facial recognition pain assessment could fundamentally change this, enabling systematic pain monitoring at scale. Key welfare benefits would accrue from earlier analgesic treatment, identification of chronic pain conditions, and evidence-based assessment of painful procedures. However, technology readiness remains limited — real-world farm environments with variable lighting, occlusion, and animal movement challenge current systems.
