For shrimp, which have nervous systems capable of nociception and show avoidance learning, these stressors likely constitute genuine suffering. Intensive systems are economically motivated — higher density means more product per unit area — but the welfare costs are borne by billions of individuals per production cycle. Certification standards that set density limits represent progress, but enforcement is challenging in major producing countries. Consumer demand for certified products, and retailer commitments to sourcing standards, are among the most effective levers for improvement.
