Poor ventilation in poultry houses causes suffering that is invisible to consumers and difficult to audit remotely. Chronic exposure to ammonia causes conjunctivitis, footpad dermatitis exacerbation, and respiratory irritation in birds that cannot escape the environment. Heat stress in broiler chickens leads to panting, prostration, and heat death — a documented problem in summer across intensive broiler operations worldwide. Ventilation failures in hot conditions have killed hundreds of thousands of birds in single incidents. Welfare standards that require specific air quality measurements, temperature management protocols, and emergency ventilation backup would substantially reduce this suffering, but enforcement requires on-farm monitoring rather than paperwork audit.
