Cows that freely choose to visit the milking unit, approach it calmly, and leave without constraint may experience a less stressful milking process. The welfare challenges are also real: AMS farms are frequently housed year-round without pasture access because the system design incentivises indoor management. Cows that avoid the robot due to fear or lameness can develop painful udder engorgement. The welfare outcome depends enormously on management quality: farms that use AMS health data proactively and provide outdoor access have better welfare outcomes than those using the technology simply to reduce labour costs.
