Environmental complexity in laboratory animal housing represents one of the clearest cases in animal welfare where improving welfare and improving science are mutually reinforcing rather than conflicting goals. Laboratory mice in barren cages experience chronic stress that alters their physiology in ways that confound research results — stress hormones, immune markers, and pain sensitivity are all affected by housing conditions. Enriched, socially housed animals may produce research results that are more representative of normal physiology and more translatable to human or target animal populations. The welfare argument and the scientific quality argument converge, making this an area where institutional commitment to refinement has dual justification. Yet implementation remains uneven, with many facilities continuing to use minimally enriched housing for cost and standardisation reasons.
