The design of containers, crates, and vehicles used to transport live animals is a critical determinant of welfare during transit, with inadequate space, ventilation, and structural design causing preventable suffering at enormous scale.
Transport container design affects animal welfare in ways that are largely invisible to the public and often overlooked in welfare policy discussions focused on journey duration and conditions at origin and destination. An animal confined in a container for 12 hours that cannot adopt a comfortable resting posture, access water, maintain stable footing during braking, or regulate body temperature within an adequate range is experiencing welfare harm that compounds over time. The design problems are often known but not addressed because improvements add cost and reduce payload capacity. Container floor anti-slip coatings, appropriate stocking density, adequate headroom, and sufficient ventilation capacity represent engineering solutions that are available but require regulatory mandating or commercial incentive to implement at scale.
