Intensive feedlot production concentrates cattle at high density in pens that provide little beyond nutritional needs. The absence of grazing opportunity, limited social choice, and environmental monotony represent a departure from behaviourally appropriate conditions. Research has demonstrated that simple interventions can improve welfare meaningfully: brushes that cattle can use voluntarily reduce stress indicators and are used extensively when provided. Maintaining stable social groups reduces the aggression associated with mixing. Shade and sprinkler systems mitigate heat stress in hot climates. These improvements are often low-cost relative to the welfare benefit they deliver. The challenge is industry culture and the absence of mandatory enrichment standards for feedlot systems in most countries.
