Genetic uniformity in commercial livestock creates populations that are efficient in stable conditions but fragile when novel challenges emerge. When a new pathogen evolves or environmental conditions shift, genetically diverse populations have more variation to draw on in mounting an effective response. Mass mortality events in genetically uniform populations — whether from disease or extreme weather — cause welfare harm on an enormous scale. Conservation of rare breeds and their genetic material is therefore not merely a cultural heritage concern but a welfare investment with long-term consequences. Integrating diversity metrics into breeding programmes alongside production traits would reduce systemic vulnerability while maintaining commercial viability.
