Shelter environments, however well-managed, are inherently stressful for most companion animals. The unfamiliar smells, sounds, and social dynamics; the confinement; the unpredictable routine — all trigger stress responses that compromise welfare and can cause behavioural changes that make animals less adoptable. Fostering provides an individually tailored bridge: animals live in a home environment where stress is lower, normal social behaviour can be expressed, and the specific needs and personality of each animal can be observed and communicated to potential adopters. This improves both welfare during the waiting period and the quality of rehoming matching.
