Precision livestock farming offers genuine welfare potential by enabling individual-animal monitoring at a scale impossible through direct human observation. A farmer checking a herd of 500 cattle visually once daily will miss early signs of lameness or disease that a continuous sensor system could detect within hours. Earlier detection means earlier treatment, which means less suffering. The welfare promise of PLF technology is real, but several challenges must be addressed: algorithmic bias (systems trained on majority data may perform poorly on minority individuals), data privacy and ownership, the risk that technology replaces rather than supplements human-animal interaction, and the cost barrier for smaller farms. PLF is a tool that improves welfare in the hands of motivated, skilled stockpeople — it does not replace the skill and care it supports.
