Disease spillover at the livestock-wildlife interface causes welfare harm in both directions: wild animals that carry or contract diseases experience welfare consequences from the disease itself and from control measures including culling; domestic animals affected by wildlife-origin diseases experience suffering and often mass mortality events. Management approaches that focus on lethal control of wild reservoir species — badger culling for bovine tuberculosis, bison culling for brucellosis — are controversial because the welfare cost to wildlife is direct and certain while the benefit to livestock welfare is contested by evidence.
