However, the welfare benefit is not automatic: systems that require frequent human-driven fetching of reluctant cows impose handling stress that may negate other benefits. Cow traffic design — free, guided, or forced — significantly affects welfare outcomes. Farms that use AMS as a labour reduction tool without investing in animal-centred management design may not deliver the welfare improvements the technology enables.
