Broodstock animals represent the genetic foundation of aquaculture production, yet receive welfare consideration primarily as genetic resources rather than as individuals with long-term welfare needs. Held for years rather than months, they experience repeated handling and spawning induction procedures that accumulate welfare costs across their productive lifetimes. Social isolation — common where genetic line separation is required — imposes additional welfare costs on naturally social species. Progressive broodstock management is beginning to recognise that individual welfare and genetic management objectives can be reconciled: social housing within genetic lines, minimally invasive genetic sampling methods, and welfare-conscious anaesthesia and spawning protocols can improve welfare without compromising genetic programme objectives. This requires broodstock welfare to be included as an explicit objective in programme design.
