Welfare key performance indicators provide the quantitative foundation for evidence-based welfare management. Without measurement, welfare claims are assertion; with consistent measurement, they become evidence. KPIs that track the right indicators — outcome measures like lameness prevalence, body condition scores, injury rates, and behavioural measures alongside input measures like stocking density and enrichment provision — create accountability and enable continuous improvement. The challenge is selecting KPIs that are valid, reliable, and practical to collect: indicators that require expert assessment are difficult to embed in routine farm management, while those easily collected by farm staff may be less sensitive to welfare change. The Welfare Quality project developed KPI sets that balance these requirements for major livestock species. Digital systems that automate data collection and generate trend reports reduce the burden of KPI monitoring while increasing its reach.
