Digital monitoring technology offers genuine potential to improve livestock welfare by enabling earlier detection of health problems, reducing reliance on infrequent human inspections, and generating data that can reveal systemic welfare issues invisible to casual observation. Systems currently in use or development include accelerometers for detecting lameness and calving, microphones for detecting abnormal vocalizations, cameras with AI analysis for pain face recognition, and individual RFID-based feeding and drinking monitors. Barriers include cost, reliability in farm environments, and the need for trained staff to act on alerts.
