Welfare Considerations

Some invasive species also suffer welfare problems: lionfish removed for bounty programs are often killed inhumanely, and electrofishing as a control method may cause suffering in both target and non-target fish. The scale of ecological disruption caused by successful invasive species is enormous and the welfare consequences for billions of individual native animals are rarely considered. Prevention is the highest-priority intervention from both ecological and welfare perspectives.
