Octopus welfare is a frontier issue that has attracted significant scientific and public attention. Evidence of octopus intelligence, curiosity, play behavior, and pain response is substantial and growing. The farming of octopuses is particularly controversial because their solitary and territorial nature means that group housing causes chronic stress and injury. Their dietary needs — live prey in the wild — are difficult to meet at scale with acceptable welfare. Their complex environmental requirements (enrichment, hiding places, varied substrates) are essentially incompatible with industrial-scale production. Leading welfare scientists have called for a moratorium on commercial octopus farming until these problems can be addressed.
