The Five Freedoms and the more recent Five Domains model are foundational frameworks for understanding and assessing animal welfare. This page explains both.
The Five Freedoms framework transformed how animal welfare is understood by moving from a focus on productivity to a focus on the experience of the animal. The five freedoms are: freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury, or disease; freedom to express normal behavior; and freedom from fear and distress. The more recent Five Domains model developed by David Mellor builds on this by organizing welfare around nutrition, environment, health, behavior, and mental state, with explicit attention to positive as well as negative experiences. Both frameworks have been enormously influential in shaping animal welfare legislation, certification schemes, and research.
