The welfare of guinea pigs is frequently compromised by housing them in small cages without companions, insufficient hay, and diets heavy in pellets rather than fresh grass and vegetables. Lone guinea pigs commonly show signs of chronic stress. Many are sold as starter pets for children without guidance on their complex care requirements, leading to high rates of neglect and early death. Hay should make up 80% of their diet to maintain dental and gut health.
