The kangaroo industry represents a profound welfare challenge at scale. While the commercial code requires instantaneous brain shots, field conditions make this difficult to achieve consistently — non-target shots cause suffering before death. Joeys dependent on their mothers face particularly severe outcomes: pouch young are required to be killed by decapitation or blunt force trauma, while at-heel young are often simply abandoned to starvation and predation. Monitoring and enforcement in remote areas where shooting occurs is minimal, creating conditions where welfare violations are unlikely to be detected.
