Axolotl Welfare: A Critically Endangered Species as a Pet

Axolotls are extraordinary amphibians that retain larval features throughout their lives. While popular as pets, they are Critically Endangered in the wild and have specific welfare needs.

Welfare Considerations

Axolotl welfare problems in captivity are extremely common. The most critical issue is temperature — axolotls kept above 22-24C develop potentially fatal bacterial and fungal infections, lose appetite, and float at the surface in distress. Many owners keep them in warm room-temperature water without realizing the danger. As ambush predators with poor vision, they need appropriate tank mates and no substrate that can be accidentally ingested. While captive populations cannot rescue wild axolotls from extinction, poor captive welfare is still a significant ethical concern given the millions kept worldwide.

What You Can Do

Maintain axolotl water temperature between 14-20C — use a chiller if necessary in warm climates
Use a sand or bare-bottom substrate to prevent ingestion injuries
Never house axolotls with fish that may nip their feathery external gills
Test water quality weekly and perform regular partial water changes
Source axolotls from reputable breeders rather than stores that may keep them in poor conditions
