Laboratory rats, by contrast, are frequently housed in barren cages with minimal enrichment, leading to chronic stress that may confound experimental results. The 3Rs framework calls for Refinement of rat laboratory housing, and evidence-based standards for environmental enrichment are increasingly being adopted in research institutions.
