Alpacas and llamas are farmed globally for their fiber, but welfare standards vary enormously. Understanding the issues helps consumers make more informed choices.
Alpaca fiber production welfare concerns center primarily on shearing practices rather than living conditions. Alpacas can be sheared humanely with low-stress handling techniques — the difference between a calm shearing and a distressing one depends almost entirely on stockperson training and commitment. PETA investigations have documented rough shearing practices at some large-scale facilities, but these do not represent all producers. Small-scale community farming in the Andes typically involves closer relationships between herders and animals. Supply chain transparency is limited — most consumers cannot trace the specific conditions under which their alpaca sweater was produced. Certification schemes are emerging but not yet comprehensive.
