Millions of companion animals are abandoned annually. Understanding why abandonment happens and how to prevent it reduces one of the most preventable sources of animal suffering.
Companion animal abandonment represents a welfare harm caused by the mismatch between ownership expectations and ownership reality. Animals surrendered to shelters experience the acute stress of separation from familiar environments and people they are bonded to. Animals abandoned outdoors face immediate survival challenges for which domesticated animals are poorly equipped. The root causes of abandonment — inadequate preparation before acquisition, housing insecurity, behavior problems, and life changes — are addressable through better pre-adoption support, accessible behavior resources, and housing policies that accommodate pets.
