Welfare Considerations

Farmed salmon welfare challenges are well-documented and the solutions are largely available but not universally implemented. Sea lice management causes welfare harm through both the infestation itself and the treatment interventions. Crowding at routine management events causes acute stress. Slaughter without effective prior stunning causes suffering at the end of life. Environmental impoverishment in net pens — no substrate, no current to swim against, no prey to hunt — denies salmon the behavioral opportunities that their ecological profile demands. The ASC certification provides minimum standards but these do not represent best practice. Consumer demand for higher welfare certification and producer willingness to invest in improvement are the limiting factors for change.
