Precision livestock technology represents genuine welfare opportunity if implemented with welfare goals rather than purely production goals. The ability to detect lameness, illness, and stress at the individual animal level before clinical signs are apparent allows earlier intervention and shorter suffering duration. Continuous monitoring identifies welfare problems that point-in-time inspections miss — including nighttime behaviors, social interactions, and chronic low-level abnormalities. The risk is that technology becomes a production optimization tool that ignores welfare signals that do not affect productivity, or that it substitutes for adequate staffing rather than augmenting human care. The welfare benefit of precision technology depends entirely on whether welfare outcomes are included in the data analysis and acted upon.
